Award Winning Designs that Have Christmas All Wrapped up

Take a look back at some of the very best creative Christmas installations and brand packaging ever to grace the D&AD Professional Awards.

Regent Street Christmas Lights

Regent Street Christmas Lights
Award: In Book / Digital Installations / Digital Installations / 2008
Agency: Wieden + Kennedy
Client: Nokia

The Regent Street lights started in 1954 after a visiting journalist commented that London wasn’t very magical at Christmas. Each year the switching on of the lights has come to signify the start of the Christmas season for most Londoners. Nokia wanted to give a lighting installation to London to celebrate the arrival of their flagship store on the street. They wanted to put the magic and beauty back into the Christmas lights; they also wanted to offer something innovative and exciting. Lights that were responsive to the elements and shoppers alike – something that Regent Street had never seen before.

2009 Xmas Advent Calendar

2009 Xmas Advent Calendar
Award: Nomination / Environmental Design / Installations / 2010
Agency: Wieden+Kennedy London
Client: Wieden+Kennedy London

The brief was to create a Christmas greeting for the friends and neighbours of Wieden+Kennedy London, spread the Christmas spirit and bring a smile to people’s faces. So we created a street advent calendar. Every day we decorated something in our neighbourhood with a Christmas twist. This gigantic calendar was placed in our office window, so people could walk by and see what we had done that day. The calendar doubled as a map so people could easily find where the actual decorations were. A website was also created for those who couldn’t visit our neighbourhood.

Spicers Christmas Gift

Spicers Christmas Gift
Award: In Book / Packaging Design / Physical Shape / 2008
Design Group: nutcracka creative / Reb Design
Client: Spicers Paper Australia

The project allowed us to explore the ritual of gift giving as well as investigate the new eco attitude to packaging. It soon became obvious that regurgitating an old approach was not enough. We were inspired to concentrate on a simple but unusual technique: constructing the box entirely by folding one sheet of paper without gluing or tabbing. It is wholly held together by the lid which, when opened, transforms the box into an unexpected sculpture.

Ornaments/Mistletoe/Soup Spoon/Sub Stripes

Ornaments/Mistletoe/Soup Spoon/Sub Stripes
Award: In Book / Packaging Design / Packaging / 2008
Advertising Agency: Colle + McVoy
Client: Erbert and Gerbert

Erbert and Gerbert wanted a fun and interactive piece that people couldn’t ignore during the holidays. Wrapped submarine sandwiches already resemble a present, so Colle + McVoy thought they’d complete the connection by wrapping them in sub themed Christmas paper. The existing tagline for the store is ‘Subs worth discovering’, so we made all of the holiday patterns based on sub imagery, rewarding the viewer for even deeper exploration.
