Ny-Ålesund is situated on the 79th parallel north which makes it the most northerly permanent civilian settlement in the world. It houses the largest laboratory for modern Arctic research in existence. Even though there are many rules and regulations to protect the the environment, one can see the human activity through the scientific instruments, which are gradually becoming part of the landscape.

Anna Filipova is a documentary photographer. For the past few years, she has been focusing on the northern parts of the world, where she explores social and environmental topics in remote and inaccessible areas.
