Award: Wood Pencil

Wood Pencil / Book Design / Entire Books / 2015

When Shaolan Hsueh began to teach her British-born children Chinese, she realised how difficult it is for non-natives. And so, Chineasy was born, a project that offers a truly deep understanding of Chinese culture, history and etymology via carefully designed illustrated characters. Following strict artistic guidelines, every character illustration had to be fun and effective, culturally independent and universal. By memorising small sets of building blocks based on stories and etymology, readers can learn to build new characters and phrases, accelerating their learning of beautiful ancient symbols used by billions of people over thousands of years.
