TATAMI

Award: Graphite Pencil

Graphite Pencil / Graphic Design / Posters (Graphic Design) / 2013

In Japan, the ancient unit of measure ‘jo’ is still used today for calculating the area of a room. The dimensions of Jo are equal to a single Tatami mat. To promote TTN Corporation’s Tatami mat outlet Igusa Mono, we wanted to emphasise the beauty of this culturally significant object in the simplest way possible. Using close-up photographs of a black Tatami mat, printed on traditional white Japanese paper (to echo the contrasts in calligraphy), we could accentuate the beauty of its fine, woven handcraft and stitching. The posters present Tatami in its purest form.
