Tree Concert

Award: Wood Pencil

Wood Pencil / Crafts for Design / Sound Design & Use of Music for Websites & Digital Design / 2013

The city of Berlin loses thousands of trees every year. Friends of the Earth Germany aims to stop this trend. Our idea was a one-of-a-kind charity concert, with a chestnut tree as the musician. We built a special set of instruments at the base of the tree. Each instrument consisted of a steel frame, encompassed by polymer membranes. Internal sensors registered any impact on the membrane and converted the vibration into an artistic composition of sound and light. As leaves and chestnuts fell, the tree could play for its companions and collect donations. ‘Tree Concert’ gained massive media coverage and led to a new donation record for the preservation of trees.
