Wi-Fiction

Award: Yellow Pencil

Yellow Pencil / Mobile Marketing / Writing for Mobile Marketing / 2012

Wi-Fiction is an entirely new digital medium of storytelling that works by hijacking the ‘available networks’ pop-up window on mobile devices. A box containing a set of Wi-Fi routers was placed in Federation Square, Melbourne’s cultural epicentre and Australia’s biggest free Wi-Fi hotspot. When anyone nearby used a smartphone, iPad or laptop, they saw the list of network names had seemingly conspired to create short, humorous stories. During the festival, over 65,000 visitors were exposed to over 20 different Wi-Fiction stories, bringing to life the festival theme, ‘Stories Unbound’.
