Olympic Football 50p
Wood Pencil / Graphic Design / Applied Print Graphics / 2011
The Royal Mint held a national competition, seeking 50p coin-face designs for each Olympic sport. To represent football, I applied some lateral thinking to explain the offside rule. After researching FIFA’s ‘Laws of the Game’, I drafted a scale diagram of a 75m x 105m football pitch. My tripartite copy, ‘Offside explained’/ ‘Offside’/ ‘Not offside’, works like a one-liner, making this possibly the world’s first amusing legal tender. It’s probably also the world’s only coin to be designed on Microsoft Paint. The design was approved by the Chancellor of the Exchequer and Her Majesty the Queen.
