Fantasy author Neil Gaiman was specially commissioned to create six original short pieces to accompany Dave McKean’s illustrations. As a prolific creator of works of prose, poetry and drama in the genres of fantasy and science-fiction, Gaiman is a prestigious choice as author for the pack. He was limited to 900 words, as one side features a full illustration. We gave him two choices: to write fact-based narratives featuring the six fabulous creatures (dragon, unicorn, giant, pixie, mermaid and fairy); or to pen six mini-stories featuring each creature. In the event he opted to write six short stories with a combined word count of approximately 870.
