To cover Somali pirates, most magazines might focus on an exposition of the danger involved in catching the brigands or the situation on the ships. Not Wired. We wanted to get inside the pirates’ minds, and that meant grasping the economics of piracy, down to the last equation. We’d already worked with illustrator Siggi Eggertsson on smaller pieces, and this was an opportunity to showcase his talent on a heftier project. In collaborationwith typographer Michael Doret, we also developed a red-lobster-menu-meets-Chris-Ware aesthetic for the type. It was the most original infographic feature we’ve ever worked on, thanks to Siggi’s great illustrations.
