Furchtbar Komisch

Award: Wood Pencil

Wood Pencil / Magazine & Newspaper Design / Magazine Sections / 2010

This is the story of the well-known Fasching oder Karneval in Germany, a tradition that is hundreds of years old. Today, in the cities, Karneval is just a big party. Photographer Axel Hoedt has done extensive research in a rural area in the south of Germany, called Schwaben. There, village people wear traditional self-made masks that seem partly funny, partly scary in his photos. It’s an uncanny sight even for Germans.
