The New Hippies is the special fashion issue of ZEITmagazin, the German weekly DIE ZEIT’s magazine supplement (circulation 500,000). An entire issue, seemingly based on a retro phenomenon, was made to look the opposite of retro: fresh, up-to-date, and capturing the spirit of the year 2008. The theme for the magazine was 'fashion gets colourful'. Features included: Hip, Hipper, Hippies – a visit to the new flower children of Los Angeles, and photo spread by Mark Borthwick on the current flower-power look; Marc Jacob‘s Universe – this decade‘s most important fashion designer is going through a very productive midlife-crisis; The Big Showdown – the Magnum-photographer Paolo Pellegrin has been to the most important shows in New York, Milan and Paris. Translation of cover one: The new hippies – their home is, once again, California. Translation of cover two: But this time around, they are dressed decently. A fashion issue.
