Award: Yellow Pencil

Yellow Pencil / Magazine & Newspaper Design / Magazine Front Covers / 2009

The week of the breaking news of Governor Spitzer's prostitute scandal, we provided several fine artists and graphic designers with a number of carefully chosen photographs of Spitzer and asked them for their visual interpretation of the event. We hoped that one of these art contributions would make a memorable and exciting cover. Barbara Kruger’s simple response was brilliant. She cleverly summarised the essence of the shocking scandal by adding her signature iconic red text box saying 'BRAIN' with an arrow pointing to the crotch, on a Henry Leutwyler photograph of Spitzer. The news dailies had flooded the market the week before our Monday publishing date with daily coverage, allowing us to publish a cover with virtually no type, and create something iconic.
