Phone Star

Award: Wood Pencil

Wood Pencil / Broadcast Innovations / Broadcast Innovations / 2009

Phone Star was the first vocal talent competition performed through a mobile phone. Thousands of hopefuls auditioned through their Centennial mobile phones. Judges from Sony BMG chose ten finalists. The audience voted for their favourite through text messaging. The faces of the contestants weren’t seen; only their voices were heard. After five weeks and over 200,000 votes, we found our first Phone Star, who won a record deal with Sony BMG.
