In 2008, PUMA became a competitor in, and official supplier of the 2008 Volvo Ocean Race. GBH were briefed to create all branding and design for PUMA’s involvement, which included creating the livery of the race boat itself. It was key that the PUMA philosophy of doing things its own way was on display in the usually corporate world of sailing. Named ‘II Mostro’ (Italian for monster) after PUMA’s biggest selling shoe, the boat was designed to look just like the shoe. In addition, GBH designed a ‘boating’ typeface, which was used for the 'Il Mostro' logotype and formed the basis of the overall branding for PUMA ocean racing, the team, advertising and merchandise.
