The brief was to design a new cantilever for the 21st Century. Although the archetype had been explored formerly, it had not responded or embraced technological advances. Somehow the cantilever was still trapped by its humble tubular steel beginnings. The archetype of the cantilever is somehow imprinted on our minds as one of the most enduring symbols of 20th Century modernism – a symbol of optimism that epitomizes the role of man as inventor. The inception was one of those rare moments when a new technology really does create a breakthrough.
