Out of the Ordinary: Spectacular Craft, a V&A and Crafts Council exhibition, brought together the work of eight contemporary artists who place craft at the heart of their practice. Each transforms ordinary materials – paper, thread, dust, nails – into artworks that are extraordinary. The challenge for Jamie Fobert Architects was to design spaces that responded to the character of the art pieces. The exhibition design consisted of cast-plaster blocks stacked to form walls within the space. The blocks were neutral in tone and abstract in form, yet also had a definite presence within the space; they mapped out the territories allocated to each artist and, by their substance, reinforced the exhibition’s themes of craft and materiality.
