Medicine Man

Award: Wood Pencil

Wood Pencil / Environmental Design / Exhibitions / 2008

Medicine Man is a permanent gallery situated within the new Wellcome Collection. The gallery showcases Henry Wellcome, founder of the Wellcome Trust, and his magnificent collection. The Medicine Man gallery greets you with a huge Wunderkammer, a backlit cabinet of curiosities filled with glassware and Henry Wellcome’s personal memorabilia. The grand scale of Wellcome’s collection becomes apparent in this dramatic display. The design of the gallery combines the dark atmosphere of a Victorian study with clear and contemporary forms. The entire gallery is clad in walnut with focus cases sunk into the walls. Visitors are repeatedly encouraged to interact with the exhibition by opening drawers and panels to delve deeper into the curious world of Henry Wellcome.
