Hall of the Amsterdam Historical Museum
Wood Pencil / Environmental Design / Museums & Galleries / 2008
The entrance hall of the Amsterdam Historical Museum is an introductionto the whole collection. A ‘cloud’ of objects gives the impression of elements flying from outside the city into the museum. These authentic objects are caught in an installation of 55 showcases, each referring to the 23 galleries of the museum. Using touch screens, visitors can stroll through a digital version of the cloud and gain more information about each object. A 13-metre long multimedia presentation on the side wall, showing fragments of the museum’s paintings, brings the city and the objects to life. On the back wall, a digital chronological map is projected, showing the development and growth of Amsterdam from the year 1100 until the present.
