The Belgrade Theatre
Yellow Pencil / Environmental Design / Leisure & Tourism / 2008
In late 2002 Stanton Williams was appointed to design a major extension for the Grade II listed 1950s Belgrade Theatre. The £11million project, accommodating a new 300 seat studio theatre, rehearsal space, dressing rooms, foyer, bar and box office, plus refurbishment of the existing building, opened in September 2007. The new theatre space, conceived as a ‘found space’, has flexible seating, staging and technical gantries that support a wide range of theatrical forms. The sculptural shape of the building, strong colours, simple materials and striking lighting are now visible across Coventry; the project has acted as a catalyst for the regeneration of the local area into a new cultural quarter.
