Duality

Award: Graphite Pencil

Graphite Pencil / Digital Installations / Digital Installations / 2008

Passers-by trigger this reactive installation that interplays between solid and liquid, virtual and real, light and water. Their footsteps generate virtual waves that transform into water waves in the pond. The objective of the installation was to create a stronger sense of identification between commuters and the location – outside a building complex in Tokyo. The concept was inspired by the dual nature of light, the so-called ‘wave-particle duality’, but during the development process, the immediate playfulness and challenge to the expectations of media technology in public spaces became important to the final realisation. The installation’s features were all designed to question the status quo, while at the same time provide a playful moment to enrich the commute.
