Roy Lichtenstein Beginning to End
Wood Pencil / Book Design / Entire Books / 2008
This comprehensive catalogue is for an exhibition about Roy Lichtenstein’s painting technique. A transparent overlay with only black strokes is superimposed over the blue dots on the cover, replicating Lichtenstein’s technique of painting the dots first and finishing with the black outlines. Each step of Lichtenstein’s work process is linked with lines, just like the lines of an underground transportation system. Typeface choices emulate the inspiration Lichtenstein drew from graphic elements in popular culture. Display fonts are Luggage (based on luggage tag lettering) and VGA Rounded (Volkswagen’s corporate typeface). The catalogue also features photographs of Lichtenstein taken by the artist’s friend Bob Adelman, among others.
