STOPOVER
Wood Pencil / Book Design / Entire Books / 2008
‘STOPOVER’ is a story of Indian-Fijian migration. Indians were shipped to Fiji from 1879 under an unfortunate indenture system to work in the colony’s sugar cane fields. Now, the descendants of those labourers are emigrating in considerable numbers as a succession of coups, ensuing racism and economic hardship reinforce their view that their future lies elsewhere – in first world cities. The brief was to work with a suite of 61 social-documentary photographs, collected colour snapshots, detailed diary notations, and a fictional story by an Indian-Fijian émigré, to make a book that tells this story of migration with intimacy and dignity – a meaningful social and political art document.
