Award: Wood Pencil

Wood Pencil / Websites / Interface & Navigation / 2007

Universal Leonardo is an innovative website that aims to extend public appreciation of Leonardo da Vinci's work. Best known for his art, Leonardo was also a notable scientist, inventor and writer. The site explores each of these fields in enough detail to be used as an educational resource, yet with enough simplicity to be easily understood. Its design centrepiece is an interactive time-line that enables users to explore Leonardo's work in context. Through such innovations, as well as inspirational text, images and activities, Universal Leonardo aims to move our hands, eyes and minds closer to Leonardo's genius. As one visitor observed, “what a sensual website. I felt like a small child who had suddenly found magic powers on the tips of his fingers.”
