Audi's 'Spider' created an interesting set of problems to work around in the creation of what is, hopefully, a complex and frightening sound space. The focus of a soundtrack is usually the picture in front of you, but since 'Spider' is essentially a piece of classic horror, the sound of unseen action plays a pivotal role in heightening the tension. The sonic description of the fleeting movements of some unknown, hidden being works in tandem with screeching violins designed to be far more than just an accompaniment and to actually exist in the space between musical soundtrack and sound design, drawing the viewer into this single unified soundscape. Every aspect was geared towards immersing the viewer in the film.
