Morpheus
Wood Pencil / Environmental Design / Installations / 2007
Morpheus, a motorized chandelier, de-constructs what a chandelier is, and explores what it could be. Rather than just a static, traditional object to be viewed, we created Morpheus, a chandelier that changes its form through interaction with the viewer. Morpheus is shaped by the viewer's imagination: from a circle, to a square, to an infinity sign and anything in between. The many permutations of the ten-foot diameter Morpheus light sculpture, comprising 16,000 crystals, are possible through the use of servo-motors and lead cables that apply pressure to a flexible spring steel assembly. The chandelier is controlled by a remote tablet and custom-made drawing software that triggers the magical transformation of the entire light. The viewer acts as a puppeteer to Morpheus, changing not just the shape, but the luminosity as well.
