Liver Street Car Park

Award: Wood Pencil

Wood Pencil / Environmental Design / Public Space & Community / 2007

At the Liver Street Car Park, the challenge of a difficult building typology was coupled with a series of constraints including an extremely tight programme, a sensitive site context, and a need to make a positive contribution to the surrounding public realm. Our solution was to express the building's function with a lightweight aesthetic and a palette of robust materials. The result is an unashamedly contemporary building, rich in texture and colour, which marks the gateway to Paradise Street. Access ramps project out from the main structure to express the movement of vehicles within; the semi-transparent walls also reveal the structure's use. At street level, a brick-faced boundary wall 'grounds' the building and acts as a sculptural form.
