Fornarina London

Award: Wood Pencil

Wood Pencil / Environmental Design / Retail & Services / 2007

Fornarina's London store, located on legendary Carnaby Street, swallows visitors whole with its organic, diaphanous, and luminous interior. The walls and ceiling are composed of a continuous, undulating surface of more than 1,000 asymmetric moulded polycarbonate elements that envelope the space and create a total sensory experience. The cellular components protrude from the wall at random, generating integrated displays for merchandise. The cool tones of the LED-backlit surface form a surrogate sky that wraps around the customer in a constantly changing membrane. A breathtaking, curved staircase forms the backbone of the store, joining the first and second levels and creating a sense of anticipation and mystery for the traveller bound up in life's journey.
