Beatbox Family

Award: Wood Pencil

Wood Pencil / TV & Cinema Graphics / TV & Cinema Promotions, Stings & Programme Junctions / 2006

This commercial opens in a comfortable suburban house. A nervous teenage boy walks up to the door and rings the bell. A conservatively dressed dad opens the door. The boy asks to see ‘Jennifer’ and the dad responds with strange guttural sounds. He is beatboxing. The boy looks frightened yet follows him into the house. A beatbox dialogue ensues between various members of the family as the confused boy looks on. Finally, a young teenage girl hurries down the stairs. Before she can get to her waiting date, her little sister tries to get the boy’s attention by thrusting a ferret in his face. Soon, we are in the middle of an all out family beatbox battle. The battle ends when the teenage girl grabs her boyfriend and runs out of the house. Anyone can watch MTV, but if you want to become a citizen, you have to learn how to speak the language.
