The Best Dutch Book Designs 04

Award: Wood Pencil

Wood Pencil / Graphic Design / Brochures & Catalogues / 2006

Catalogues like these tend to reproduce the nominated books in order to show a lot of spreads on a relatively small number of pages. Essential graphic design features, such as the actual feel of a book, and the typographic details get lost in such a small space this way. However this catalogue tries to give the readers the sensation that they are really opening the nominated books, at least for a moment. To achieve this, each book is reproduced on eight picture pages, with all spreads reproduced to actual size. These are inserted in eight smaller text pages that are only half as wide as the picture pages. These smaller pages work like page markers that help the reader navigate from book to book. The Dutch texts and the English translations are ordered symmetrically around the picture pages. Only on the back do the two languages meet without translation: BO K.
