Cartlidge Levene were commissioned by the Design Council to design their publication ‘The Business of Design’, a presentation of the results of an extensive survey of the design industry. A simple typographic grid and range of chart styles were developed to present the complex data in a simple way, allowing readers to use the document as an in-depth reference book, or just skim-read for the key findings. Quotes from people working in the industry are displayed in handwriting to give it a human angle. A section at the back of the book highlights the regional differences brought to light by the survey. The twelve regions of the UK are presented as graphic, flat-colour shapes to bring a more playful edge to what could have become a heavy facts and figures document. The audience consists mainly of designers and those connected with the design industry, so the intention is for the publication to present the facts clearly and succinctly but to also have a creative edge.
