The New Austria

Award: Wood Pencil

Wood Pencil / Environmental Design / Exhibitions, Museums & Installations / 2006

The exhibition 'The New Austria' celebrates the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Austrian state treaty and traces the changing face of Austrian history and artistic developments during the 20th century. The exhibition covers the disintegration of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the difficult years between the wars, the creation of democratic Austria, the years of reconstruction, the Cold War and the Iron Curtain, and today's modern, neutral Austria. A central element of the exhibition is the 250-metre long Austrian national flag that passes through all the exhibition's rooms. In addition to conveying information, the flag acts as an interface for audiovisual media and provides interactive installations, enabling visitors to take an active part in the exhibition. Content can be perceived both sensually and haptically along the flag trail, enabling visitors to take charge of the knowledge transfer process themselves. The exhibition is aimed at people of all ages and uses digital technology together with exhibition design to craft playful interactive experiences and to convey the breadth of information.
