New Blood Entry — MATR1
D&AD Side Hustle / 2019
MATR1 is a platform, movement and conversation aimed at challenging young creatives to be informed about issues outside of design. It roots itself in the ethos that as young creatives ourselves, we believe knowledge is the most powerful tool we have in the wake of real-world social issues. The world isn’t looking great at the moment, and we’re not going to get out our social design violin, but we’re fucked. So we believe cross-pollinated ideas and multi-disciplinary solutions are the best way to tackle these problems.
MATR1 explores ideas, current issues and concepts, which are changing the world right now; subjects like shifting trends, social media, emerging tech, social issues, culture and politics. We frame it through the lens of creativity on Instagram. In a way young like-minded creatives will actually want to consume. Our work in 3D, web, words, animation and graphic design aims to create socially charged clickbait, to distract our community away from cat videos and towards #contentthatmatrs.
We also build projects and tools like TheHeadlines.co which seeks to challenge fake news and encourage people to think more about the rhetoric used across online news sources by being able to view the news side by side.
Through research and interviews with incredible creatives, we continue to build discussions around topics inside and outside of the creative industry. Later this year we are aiming to host a series of talks, workshops and design sprints, as well as launch a platform reimagining the format of interviews to inspire emerging creatives.
We believe social design has a dark side, and that's good. @MATR1.
