Airbnb wanted something that could empower their existing community and grow the idea of belonging. Our insight was that staying connected when travelling is important to our feeling of belonging, and that connected can mean a lot of different things. Today our smartphone plays an important role in connecting to a city and other human beings. We saw an opportunity for Airbnb to push the boundaries of the range of services a company can provide. By partnering with telecom companies, and letting the citizens "donate" the rest of their monthly data plan, Airbnb can solve a problem for their community.
