“Thank you  for the day at D&AD Judging – it was a fantastic experience for us, we had such an amazing day. We spent the whole train journey home talking about everything & re-writing our courses based on what we saw & heard. It was a real privilege to see and feel part of the whole thing, and by far the best staff development we have had for years.”

Mark Jackson, University of Wales Newport

“Thank you for a really good New Blood this year – it was great. The venue and its “environs” were great, there was … a buzz and a steady flow of punters over the four days. I am also looking forward to using the developing website as a teaching resource.”

    Peter Jones, University of Plymouth

“Thank You for this year’s D&AD for students:
I have been a student, professional and now academic growing up with D&AD over more years than I care to think about.
    This year felt RIGHT.
The briefs and clients met student expectations.
The campaign to promote the events supported our delivery.
I had the privilege of attending the judging for the professional categories.
The New Blood venue is in the right place for our receiving community (the professionals).
We met many, many professionals, serious about engaging with students.
The team at D&AD were helpful and supportive.
The industry values D&AD, the students value D&AD and the academics I speak to do too.”

  • Great content isn’t hidden

Simon Cliffe, Executive Director of BAPLA on changes in the picture buying world:

There’s a trend growing in the world of commercial picture buying, especially from within the Design Sector.

In today’s world it’s easy to find and use pictures for your work, but what’s not so easy is the art of finding the RIGHT picture – and at the British Association of Picture Libraries and Agencies (BAPLA), we’re finding more and more people asking if there’s content out there beyond the results of an online image search.

Amazing content isn’t hidden, you just need to know where to look. There are hundreds of picture libraries out there with some incredible content – but a lot of these libraries don’t have access to huge marketing budgets which means a big chunk of the newer generation of image buyers probably don’t know they exist. That’s a problem for all concerned.

BAPLA helps buyers access specialist libraries who hold nothing but golf pictures, or volleyball pictures, or railway pictures or architecture or anything you can imagine – all amazing content which could be used commercially in so many ways.

A bit part of my role is to act as a messenger to image buyers. No, not all content is free – that’s true; you might have to pay for great pictures!

I’m finding that, as more people find these great new sources of content, they are adapting their budgets to ensure a percentage is put to one side to ensure they can buy the very best pictures.

The Picture Buyers Fair, on in London later this month, gets a lot of these people out into the open, so image buyers can see there is more to life than simple online searches or the bigger stock libraries. They can actually meet the rights holders and understand how to access this content.

And for those who can’t get to the Fair – the BAPLA website acts as a 24/7 PBF (without the people or the travel!). All our members have profiles and galleries and links to their websites – and our category search helps find the libraries hosting the content buyers need. We have a themes page for inspiration – and we have an image request for those who still find themselves stuck.

Picture Buyers’ Fair, Barbican Exhibition Hall 1, London; May 19th and 20th
    Entry is Free. Register: www.pbf.org.uk

Musuta is a Finnish and Japanese multi-disciplinary design agency.  They brought Urban Abstract to life in collaboration with Shun Kawakami and Artless Inc.

Points and lines develop into one, two or three-dimensional elements of an urban landscape.  The 200-second piece can be viewed in 40 five-second parts or as a whole, beautifully changing scenes and depicting anything from raindrops to plants and buildings. A nicely designed website complements the project urban-abstract.com.
