    By now you will surely know that this is the fiftieth anniversary of CDP and that on May 19th a Presidents’ Lecture will be dedicated to the agency.  Anthony Simonds-Gooding, who was twice a client of CDP’s and contributed to some famous advertising for Birds Eye and Heineken, will act as M.C.  He is currently making a list of questions he’ll put to a panel of five of the agency’s principals, then he’ll ask the audience for further questions.  To help you let me put CDP into context.

  • D&AD’s night at the museum

    VA_Tony VA_SimonThree ex-Presidents gave a talk at the V&A on Friday night.  Martin Lambie-Nairn had just finished his piece, when the fire alarm went off.  The whole building had to be evacuated, but the show must and did go on; Tony & Simon spoke on the steps of the museum for the dedicated crowd who stayed around, and a few firefighters too.  The really good news is, the V&A didn’t burn down.

    Luke Williamson created winning ads for Supernoodles, Kiss FM, Dr Pepper and most notably the Orange Cinema campaign. Williamson and Elliott joined WCRS in 2005 charged with raising the creative bar. They have produced award-winning work for Transport for London, 3, Brylcreem and Sky and were recently voted No.1 in an Esquire magazine poll to find ‘the most sought-after purveyors of original thought’.

    There is London based design studio Browns which Ellery co-founded in 1998 and which he now runs creatively with partner Nick Jones. Browns has an international reputation based on its ability to mix the worlds of culture and commerce. Clients range from global brands such as Invesco, Hiscox, Dries Van Noten, The Climate Group and Channel 4 Television to small entrepreneurial businesses.

    David Hillman has won numerous design awards including D&AD Pencils for the much acclaimed book ‘English Sunrise’ and his redesign of The Guardian in 1989. His work has been exhibited at the V&A, Design Museum and the Whitechapel Art Gallery. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Society of Designers, a Royal Designer for Industry and a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale.

    Jan van Toorn, born in Tiel, Netherlands in 1932, is one of the most significant and influential Dutch graphic designers to have emerged since the early 1960s. He studied Graphic Design at the Amsterdam School of Printing from 1949 and from there the Institute of Arts and Crafts (now the Gerrit Rietveld Academie) until 1953.

    The emotional charge in Van Toorn’s designs stems from his interest in investigating visual meaning and the social role of the profession. He focuses on substance rather than smooth stylistic expression and develops questioning alternatives to the usual design world conventions.

    Peter Saville is one of the most influential designers of our time. He has created a series of iconic images, including album covers for the bands Joy Division and New Order, and conceptual design projects that are exhibited all over the world. He is now contributing to the economic regeneration of Manchester as the city’s Creative Director.

    Sanky is a founding partner of interactive agency AllofUs. After studying information design at Nottingham, Sanky joined Digit at its inception as an art director. He worked on projects for Nike, Motorola, Stella McCartney and The Design Museum amongst others.

    AllofUs, founded in 2002, focuses on how technology can be used alongside more traditional practices such as interior design, architecture, exhibition design and identity as well as working on internet based projects and application design. They currently work with BBC, Coco-de-mer, Land Securities, Natural History Museum, NHS, Nokia, Tate Britian and Sky.
