Jonathan Ellery operates in three different arenas.
Firstly there is London based design studio Browns which Ellery co-founded in 1998 and which he now runs creatively with partner Nick Jones. Browns has an international reputation based on its ability to mix the worlds of culture and commerce. Clients range from global brands such as Invesco, Hiscox, Dries Van Noten, The Climate Group and Channel 4 Television to small entrepreneurial businesses.
Secondly comes Browns Editions, the publishing arm of Browns. Ellery has designed books for, amongst others, Martin Parr, Lawrence Weiner, Susan Meiselas, Dries Van Noten, Felicé Varini and recently for photographer John Ross. The Wheatsheaf RIP is a collaboration, with Ross, to commemorate the death of their local pub due to Network Rail's expansion plans slicing through Borough Market. More recently Ellery has focused on publishing his own work, producing four conceptual, limited edition books in as many years and is currently working on his fifth.
Lastly comes Ellery's art. Working in brass, magnesium, stone, new media, sound and film, he has had one man shows at the Roth Gallery in New York (2005), the Wapping Project in London (2007), with Ellery's third solo show coming in the form of a live performance piece, 'Constance' again at the Wapping Project (2008).
Ellery will talk about his career, his experiences, the difficulties, the overlaps, the ups and the downs, but primarily the joys of working in these three arenas.
