V&A Ceramics Galleries: Gallery Identity, Interpretative Graphics and Wayfinding
The V&A ceramics galleries are a key part of the museum’s ongoing programme of restoration, redesign and refurbishment. Cartlidge Levene was commissioned to work alongside Stanton Williams architects to design the first phase of the 14-gallery permanent display. Our brief was to design the gallery identity and museum graphics, carefully integrating these with the architecture and display. Large scale typography located in the ceiling cornicing and dates painted onto wall surfaces provide narrative and act as navigational aids. An updatable label system integrates with the display cases, while a piece of low-tech interactive furniture explains the process of making ceramics with bold vitreous enamel graphics.
